INSIDE-FACING ELONGATED PLACKET
with Bias Neckline Finish
CUTTING
See Fabric Requirements for yardage information.
Main Fabric
1 Bodice Front
1 Bodice Back
1 Elongated Placket
1 bias strip 1¾˝ × 18˝ (4.4 cm × 45.7 cm)
Fusible Interfacing
1 Elongated Placket
Method
Refer to Sewing Techniques as needed. Seam allowance is ⅝˝ (1.6 cm) unless otherwise noted.
1. Staystitch Bodice Front and Bodice Back ⅜˝ (1.0 cm) from neck edges.
2. Mark centerline of Bodice Front with thread tracing or disappearing marker. Refer to The Centerline for instructions.
3. Iron interfacing to wrong side of Elongated Placket, following manufacturer’s directions.
4. Mark centerline of Elongated Placket with thread tracing or disappearing marker.
5. Mark V stitching line (center split) of Elongated Placket with thread tracing or disappearing marker.
6. Finish outside edge by pressing under ½˝ (1.3 cm). Stitch outside edge to finish.
Tip
Run basting stitches along fold line to guarantee precision!
7. With right sides together and centerlines matched, pin Elongated Placket to Bodice Front. Secure with additional pins as needed. Hand or machine baste along centerline.
8. Stitch V portion of neckline, reinforcing stitching at center front point.
9. Carefully cut along centerline to point; then trim seam allowance, tapering to center point. Understitch as far as possible to prevent rollout.
10. With Elongated Placket still outside, baste together top neckline edges of Elongated Placket and Bodice Front.
11. Sew Bodice Front to Bodice Back at shoulder seams. Finish seam allowances.
Note: To finish your tunic with a band collar instead of a bias strip, omit Steps 12–17 and follow the band collar tutorial.
